About me

I’m Filip Ciślak, a designer, letter artist, and calligrapher based in Katowice, Poland. I was born in 1988 in Żywiec and earned my Master’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice in 2013, where I studied in the Poster Design Studio under Prof. Roman Kalarus. In 2022, I completed my Ph.D. with research focused on methodologies and visual systems for teaching calligraphy to graphic design students. Currently, I work as an assistant professor in the Graphic Design Department at my alma mater, where I’m involved in both research and teaching.

My professional focus is on graphic design, specializing in lettering, calligraphy, brand identity, and publication design. My approach to calligraphy goes beyond simply reviving historical forms—I’m interested in exploring new possibilities and applications in contemporary graphic design and typography.

Over the years, I’ve conducted numerous calligraphy workshops both in Poland and internationally, with sessions in cities like Katowice, Krakow, Warsaw, Helsinki, Bratislava, and Zaragoza. Since 2016, I’ve also been leading regular calligraphy workshops for students at the Academy. I’m a member of the Calligraphymasters and Speedball Professional Artist Network collectives.

In addition to calligraphy, I’m passionate about poster design, where I’ve had the opportunity to showcase my work at various prestigious events, including the Katowice Poster Biennale (24th-28th editions), the Social-Political Poster Biennale in Oświęcim (5th and 6th editions), the 8th International Triennial of Stage Poster in Sofia (2016), and the 16th International Poster Biennale in Mexico, among others. Some of my awards include winning the international FETA Festival poster competition in 2013, receiving a distinction at the 4th Block International Poster Biennale in Kharkiv in 2018, securing second place in the Golden Turtle ’19 international poster competition, and being honored with the Director’s Award at Satyrykon 2019. I also received a silver medal at the 27th Polish Poster Biennale in Katowice.

I’m available for commissions and collaborations. If you’re interested in inviting me to conduct a workshop or teach a class at your venue, feel free to get in touch.
